For the past year, HEAL-SLO has been working on its first policy initiative, Buy Local. Buy Local is intended to promote economic vitality and support local agricultural interests, to promote optimal public health by making fresh and nutritious produce readily available, and to protect our natural resources so that future generations will have an opportunity to thrive.
The County Board of Supervisors passed a policy in July 2012 that allocates a portion of food purchasing dictated by county government to local growers. HEAL-SLO is working with the seven cities to also gain support for Buy Local efforts. To date, we have been recognized by the City of Arroyo Grande, the City of San Luis Obispo, the City of Pismo Beach, and the City of Paso Robles with proclamations.
